Notes from the Kraken: April

In All, Notes by David

Welcome again to We Have Always Live the Kraken, a pop culture blog transmitted directly to you from the belly of the beast. Here in the Notes we’ll show you this month’s posting schedule, but first, here are some thoughts.

It all comes down to one more final season. Who will sit on the throne?

Hello all, it’s been a while, but now that May is he– what’s that? It’s still April? …Oh, well, you know how this blog feels about April. We can’t do that this year? Fine. Fine. So, April is bringing about the end of two long journeys that have far-reaching fandoms. First, the final season of Game of Thrones started in April, and it may end up being the last water cooler show that everyone can agree on. Even for people that never watched Game of Thrones, there is no escaping this behemoth that has been a part of our lives for almost a whole decade. Meanwhile, after going on for even more than a decade, Avengers: Endgame is going to bring an end to a saga of 22 films in total that have more or less been connected in a way that no other franchise in film history ever has before (that it hasn’t been done particularly well doesn’t change the fact that the commitment is impressive). Both of those long-running pop culture phenomenons have brought a number of highs and lows (or in the case of Marvel films, a lot of indifferent mediums), and it will be interesting to see what is next after both are done. Obviously, in the case of Game of Thrones, we’ll have to see if any show can come even close to achieving the level of popularity and universal commitment that HBO’s fantasy epic has had, while in the case of the Marvel films, we’re looking for where the MCU goes next after this final turn from many of the actors and actresses that have built the MCU into what it is now. So let’s just take a moment to appreciate both, for no matter what you think about them overall, the truth is that both have mattered to a lot of people for a long time, and in our short-attention-span world, that is truly a feat.

From the depths of the Kraken, here is what we are bringing you this month.

Catch of the Week Month:

Each and every week the residents here in the Kraken will offer one recommendation for the week that we think you all would enjoy. It might be a movie. It might be a book. Who knows? This is your… Catch of the Week Month.

Kyu: Have I done anything in the past month or two that isn’t watching Game of Thrones and Marvel movies and thinking about and podcasting about and talking about both of those things? Not really. (Okay, I’ve been binging New Girl now that the last season is finally on Netflix, but that’s about it.) For my sake and for yours, this month I’m recommending we all try going outside for a bit. Get some sun.

David: Umm, this is a bit tough, so you know what? I am going with Whiskey Cavelier. This show is certainly not a masterpiece, but it is fun and the chemistry between Scott Foley and Lauren Cohen is fantastic (the fact that it allowed Lauren Cohen to escape The Walking Dead is another plus). This show is a nice breather while recovering from heavier shows *cough* Game of Thrones *cough* so just give it a chance, and have a lot of fun you didn’t expect to have.

That’s it for this month’s notes. We hope this gets posted at the beginning of April, but time in the Kraken tends to fluctuate wildly on April 1st, the traditional day of mischief and disturbances, so whatever day this post ended up in, please enjoy it.
