The day has finally come! The Oscars are here. You can look at my final final predictions or just thoughts in general if you are bored, but now we can finally get things started, so join along at 5 PM PST, and let’s have some fun and hopefully jello shots!
8:52 PM PST: Most importantly, Mark Bridges wins the jet ski as Kimmel ends the show. I ended up getting 19 out of 24 correct, so a good night that could have been better, as all five categories I missed went to the film that was a coin flip second choice, but oh well. That’s all! Look for my final thoughts later this week, and have a good night!
8:48 PM PST: The winner is… The Shape of Water. It manages to win with just four total Oscar wins, and proves that old metrics still work. This is a film about the love of Hollywood, and even if it couldn’t quite pull off a general consensus, it was at the top of this race the entire time. A late run by Get Out falls short. Del Toro does a great look during his speech of double checking to make sure he wins. Oh man, a producer is completely cut off before Kimmel lets him speak.
8:43 PM PST: Dunaway and Beatty crack some jokes. I wonder if there will be a bit with this.
8:42 PM PST: Okay, now time for Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway to have a second chance to get this right. Here we go…
8:40 PM PST: Best Picture is a crazy category this year, and could really go in just about any direction. No matter who wins, no real narrative can said to be met, as the love was spread pretty well, but Lady Bird winning would make this absolutely true. Now the question is, can they get the announcement right this year?
8:37 PM PST: Francis McDormand. A well-deserved win. She is the heart of her movie, and regardless of the rest of the film, she is amazing and deserves everything. McDormand is full of emotion. Oh shit, she has every female nominee stand in the theatre to get a round of applause. That is awesome. She tells Hollywood to finance the creative projects of all of these women. Great speech. I am now 19 for 23, and now just time left for Best Picture.
8:32 PM PST: Jodi Foster and Jennifer Lawerence are out for Best Actress. Nice pivot for the Academy just doing all actresses for the acting categories this year. Now the winner is…
8:31 PM PST: Now a Best Actress montage…
8:26 PM PST: Gary Oldman… This is fine. Oldman is great in that movie, and he deserves this award for being the world’s greatest acting chameleon. Oldman is not winning the jet ski, and eventually Oldman is playing chicken with the orchestra. Now I am 18 for 22.
8:22 PM PST: There is a Best Acting montage for reasons, and now Jane Fonda and Helen Mirren are out to present for Best Actor. The winner is…
8:16 PM PST: Emma Stone is out for Best Acto– I mean, Best Director (thanks Casey Affleck). The winner is Guillermo del Toro. Awesome, I am so happy for him, and so is the room. He is the only person that could have won without the room being angry about Gerwig losing. This is the fourth Mexican director to win in five years. Del Toro’s speech is awesome, and now the question is whether this is it for him, or if there is still one more prize for the film. Oh, also, I am 17 for 21, so cool.
8:12 PM PST: Well done.
8:08 PM PST: Jennifer Garner comes out to intro the In Memoriam with Eddie Vedder, so time for crying.
8:05 PM PST: The winner… “Remember Me.” Well deserved. Coco becomes the fifth animated film to win multiple Oscars. This is the song that represents this movie’s soul, and deserved to win. I am now 16 for 20, and have hit the number I at least wanted to hit.
8:04 PM PST: Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel Miranda are out for Best Song. This is a tough call between “Remember Me” and “This is Me,” which will come out on top?
7:59 PM PST: Kimmel gives props to the orchestra, and now Christopher Walken is out to present for Best Original Score. Things are picking up, as they are definitely over time, so expect some playing off to happen. The winner is Alexandre Desplat. Well deserved, and a great win. Desplat may have entered the Lubezki club, where he is just going to win for now on if nominated. I am also now 15 for 19, so hurray for not embarrassing myself.
7:56 PM PST: That was powerful, if admittedly a bit of a rough performance early on, but man, it ended so strongly.
7:55 PM PST: Zendaya comes out to introuduce the final Best Song, “This Is Me.”
7:52 PM PST: The winner is Roger motherfucking Deakins!!!! It finally happened! Deakins breaks through after 14 nominations. His speech is short and awesome. Also I am now 14 for 18. But, like Deakins won, and can leave the club. Sorry, Thomas Newman and Greg P. Russell, you lost a member of the Oscarless club.
7:49 PM PST: Sandra Bullock is out for Cinematography. Is it finally Deakins’s time? Please let it be so… unless it is Rachel Morrison.
7:45 PM PST: Wes Studi is out to do a montage for war movies? Sure, why not.
7:38 PM PST: The winner is… Jordan Peele. Hey, I got that right. Also, awesome! A well-deserved win in a tough category, and Best Picture is now in chaos. That Get Out dream is a step closer to reality. Also, Allison Williams’ face during that speech is amazing. I am now 13 for 17, which is the number of picks I got right last year.
7:37 PM PST: Nicole Kidman is out for Best Original Screenplay. This category may tell us some big things that are about to happen tonight.
7:33 PM PST: Chadwick Boseman and Margot Robbie are out to present for Best Adapted Screenplay. Look, even if it shouldn’t win, I would love for Logan to get this, but yeah, no. The winner is… James Ivory for Call Me By Your Name. Ivory is now the oldest person ever win an Oscar. This is well deserved. He should speak as long as he wants. Go James Ivory. Thank God he wasn’t played off. Back on, and now 12 for 16.
7:28 PM PST: Time for a speech about Times Up and the industry being more inclusive. Then we get a montage talking about how the films from this year are progressing the industry after years of promise. Which is true, but once again, Hollywood, don’t pat yourself on the back too much. You have a lot of work still to do.
7:24 PM PST: That was fun, and inspirational. Though it ended with a lot of shots of confused white people, which is not the look you want. I mean, it was because the music started playing again after the song ended, but still… not the best look.
7:19 PM PST: Dave Chapelle is out to introduce best song nominee “Stand for Something.”
7:16 PM PST: Now time for Live Action Short, the winner is… A Silent Child. Well, I once again miss to my second choice, but this is a great choice. She is signing! This is awesome. Way to go for a film that was funded by IndieGoGo. Oh, seriously, don’t play off the people talking about deaf children. So now I am 11 for 15, but at least I got one short correct.
7:11 PM PST: Now Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph are out after a fan introduced them. Also, never mind what I just said, these two should host the Oscars. And now time for the Shorts. First up Documentary and the winner is Happiness is a Traffic Jam on the 405. And I missed another coin flip, so now I am 11 for 14.
7:08 PM PST: Honestly, the celebs left so they could get food. The crowd is excited, and now the two audiences are looking at each other. Oh hey, Lin Manuel snuck into this group, awesome. Also, I think we should just let Gal Gadot host the Oscars.
7:00 PM PST: Back on track and now 11 for 13. Kimmel is back, and time for the People on the Street skit. This could be fun. The group going to see the people in the theatre next door looks super excited, and I am convinced Armie Hammer just went so he could hang out with Gal Gadot and Lupito Nyong’o, which, fair.
6:57 PM PST: So now I am 10 for 12. Okay. Now time for Matthew McConaughey to present for Best Editing. The winner is… Dunkirk. I am really happy for Lee Smith, even if I am sad for everyone involved with Baby Driver. Smith’s speech is adorable. He is so happy.
6:53 PM PST: Gina Rodriquez and Tom Holland are out for Best Visual Effects. The winner is… Blade Runner 2049. Darn, another missed coin flip, but I am super happy about the win. Sucks that the Apes movies are snubbed again, but still, this is a well-deserved victory. The winners are so excited, and they are played off… sigh…
6:48 PM PST: So glad that got on the show.
6:45 PM PST: Daniela Vega is out to present the song “Mystery of Love.” My favorite of the Best Song nominees.
6:42 PM PST: Now time for the Coco, I mean Animated category. And the winner is… Coco, let’s move along. I am now 10 for 11, and woo, I got a short category correct!. The speech is nice, even if this category should have just been handed out at the beginning of the show.
6:36 PM PST: Kimmel is out to talk about Star Wars. Now time for the Animated Categories. BB8 is on stage with Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, and Kelly Marie Tran. First Animated Short, the winner is… Dear Basketball. And Kobe Bryant has bought an Oscar. I mean, I do like the film, but this is funny. Kobe does show how short all of Hollywood is, so that was humorous.
6:30 PM PST: Apparently Allison Janney won, so good for her. This is a solid choice, even if I would have preferred Laurie Metcalfe, but Janney was awesome. She gives a great speech, and I am now 8 for 9. Still, what could have been if she had just said that she did it all herself and walked away. The jet ski would have been hers.
6:26 PM PST: Mahershala Ali is out for Best Supporting Actress. The winner is…
6:21 PM PST: Rita Moreno is out to present for Best Foreign Film. The winner is… A Fantastic Woman. I would have prefered The Square, but this is a good choice, and a timely pick certainly. And I am 7 for 8.
6:18 PM PST: That was awesome. That is all.
6:14 PM PST: Time for the “Remember Me” performance. Oooh, they are doing multiple versions of it.
6:08 PM PST: Oh look, another look at the Governor’s Awards that are no longer on the show. Now time for Lupita Nyong’o and Kumail Nanjiani to present the award for Production Design. Ummm, buffering, buffering, and a repeat of the category. The winner is… The Shape of Water. Well, this continues a run of the easier awards. Anyhow, 6 for 7.
6:00 PM PST: And they are back to announce Sound Mixing. I am just saying, maybe separate these, to, umm, make this appear not as one category. Anyhow, the winner is… Dunkirk. Well-deserved, that makes me 5 for 6. So still going well, even if this could all go off the rails very quickly. Just look at last year’s Live Blog.
5:58 PM PST: Ansel Elgort and Eiza Gonzalez are out to present for Sound Editing. Is this the beginning of a twofer? The winner is Dunkirk. That makes me 4 for 5.
5:57 PM PST: Kimmel is back to read the first joke from the the first Oscars, and it turns into a Christopher Plummer joke.
5:53 PM PST: And we return with a montage about, umm, movies being magic or something. Sure…
5:48 PM PST: That was quite good, and I am glad she got to perform.
5:44 PM PST: Tariji P. Henson presents Mary J. Blige to sing “A Mighty River.” I can go get a new drink.
5:41 PM PST: The winner is… Icarus. Oh well, first coin flip is a miss. This is deserved, to be fair, and it looked like the Academy wanted to stick it to Russia. So 3 out of 4, but I’ll be honest, I expected to miss this. Good for Netflix. They get an Oscar.
5:38 PM PST: Kimmel is back, and more Black Panther. Now time for Documentary. I kind of just picked a movie for this category, so let’s see if that works. Greta Gerwig and Laura Dern are out to present this award.
5:32 PM PST: The winner is… Mark Bridges for Phantom Thread. Okay, so to form so far, three for three. This would have been a place to show if The Shape of Water were going to win, but nope, so this night continues to be a cipher.
5:29 PM PST: Eva Marie Saint is out to give the award for Best Costume. This a category that could really reveal a lot about what is happening tonight. Saint is telling some fun stories, and I wish this happened more. Too bad later this time will result in, like, the Shorts winner being played off.
5:26 PM PST: The jet ski skit has taken a turn on the Get Out side. Now Gal Gadot and Armie Hammer, is out for the Hair and Makeup Oscar. The winner is… Darkest Hour. Well, two for two so far. So good start.
5:20 PM PST: The winner is… Sam Rockwell. And Twitter rage begins. Well, I am one for one so far. Haha, Rockwell wants that jet skit… and then his speech became serious. I guess he should enjoy this as much as possible. I am fine with this, honestly, as he just did what his role called for. The movie being rewarded is more of a problem, but this is fine.
5:15 PM PST: Time for Supporting Actor. We are going to know if Twitter is going to be pissed for the rest of the night. So, you know, good choice to get this out of the way. My heart hopes Dafoe can pull this off, but we will see.
5:11 PM PST: The Shape of Water is now getting love, and I swear to god I thought they were playing Kimmel off with music, but I am just jumping the gun. Still, good to know. OMG, there is a Price Is Right Reference with Helen Mirren. That is amazing. I hope someone does win that jet ski.
5:09 PM PST: More buffering, and speeches galore. Jordan Peele and Black Panther love.
5:04 PM PST: Kimmel is out for his speech, and I have buffering issues that may be happening a lot tonight… There was a joke about last year’s mix-up, I guess. That stage is really, ummm, diamondy and glitzy, I guess. Jokes about Oscar being the right kind of man. Hey, and a Harvey Weinstein reference that is both serious and a joke. This is a solid speech so far, and there is a Black Panther reference. This is going all over the place.
5:00 PM PST: And we are off, with a old timey opening and announcer. This is different… Fun, but different.
